Men’s Tennis Splits Saturday Doubleheader with Belmont Abbey
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) men's tennis team split a doubleheader against the Belmont Abbey Crusaders, falling 4-3 before winning 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.
MATCH ONE: Belmont Abbey 4, UNCG 3
The Crusaders picked up the first point in doubles by winning the first and third doubles matches. Marcus Bergelin and Nicholas Cary got it started for Belmont Abbey with a 6-1 victory over UNCG's Tymofiy Khrystyuk and Luke Thomson. The Spartans forced a third doubles game when William Elmers and John Gabelic teamed up to take down Belmont Abbey's Ricard Novell and Peyton William, 6-4. However, the Crusaders ultimately earned the point with Samuel McGregor and Isaac Buerkle defeating Andrew Black and Devon Moskowitz, 6-3.
Belmont Abbey made it 2-0 with Cary defeating Thomson, 6-0, 6-3, in the first singles match. Elmers then got UNCG on the board with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tyler Troche. Novell then took down Khrystyuk, 6-4, 7-6 (4), to make it 3-1 Crusaders. Belmont Abbey secured the win with another singles victory when Bergelin took down Black, 6-4, 6-2. The Spartans went on to win the final two singles with Gabelic prevailing, 7-5, 6-4, and Moskowitz coming out on top, 7-6 (2), 6-4. However, the Crusaders had already locked up the win in the first match, 4-3.
MATCH TWO: UNCG 7, Belmont Abbey 0
The Spartans dominated the second match. They got it started by sweeping the Crusdaders in three doubles matches to earn the first point. Black and Moskowitz finished first with a 6-1 victory before Elmers and Gabelic cruised to a 6-2 win. Khrystyuk and Thomson also teamed up to win in the third doubles, 7-6 (5).
UNCG continued to dominate in singles, starting with Khrystyuk winning, 6-0, 6-3, to make it 2-0 Spartans. Moskowitz then made it 3-0 Spartans with a pair of 6-2 scores over Monteith. Gabelic prevailed, 6-2, 6-2, to give UNCG a 4-0 lead before Thomson won, 6-2, 6-3, making it 5-0. Black then won 6-4, 6-4 to increase the lead to 6-0. Elmers capped the perfect dual for UNCG with a 1-6, 7-6 (3) win, which made it a 7-0 final in favor of the Spartans.
