Women’s Basketball to Host USC Upstate Saturday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will host the Spartans of USC Upstate on Saturday at noon in Fleming Gym.
SERIES HISTORY
UNCG holds the one-game advantage over USC Upstate at 4-3 overall after defeating the team last season, 56-53, in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG began the 2024-25 season with a 91-31 dominating victory over North Greenville on Monday night in Fleming Gym.
- Makiah Asidanya led both teams with a new career-high of 18 points.
- Jayde Gamble posted her first career double-double with a new game-high of 10 rebounds and adding 17 points, going 4-for-4 from behind-the-arc.
- The Spartans outmatched North Greenville in points in the paint (34-8), points off turnovers (29-4), second chance points (16-8), fast break points (20-3) and bench points (53-13).

- UNCG enters Saturday's contest with a 1-0 overall mark this season.
- Through one game, the Spartans are pacing The Southern Conference (SoCon) in eight statistical categories: assist/turnover ratio (1.50), field-goal percentage defense (19.2), free-throw attempts per game (28.00), free-throws made per game (22.0), defensive rebounds per game (34.0), three-point percentage (45.8), three-pointers per game (11.0) and winning percentage (100.0).
- Gamble was one of four players in the league to reach a double-double in their season opener.
- The senior is leading the conference in five categories: field-goal percentage (100.0), defensive rebounds per game (10.0), three-point percentage (100.0), three-pointers (4) and three-pointers per game (4.0).
- Asidanya is pacing the SoCon in two categories: free-throw percentage (100.0) and points per game (18.0)
- The Spartans went 21-12 overall and 8-6 in league play in the 2023-24 season.
- UNCG appeared in the SoCon Championship for the seventh time in program history last season, falling to Chattanooga, 69-60.
- The 2024-25 roster features 10 returners and five newcomers with three transfers and two freshmen.
- Three of last year's starters have returned this season in Khalis Cain, Nia Howard and Gamble.
- Head Coach Trina Patterson is in her ninth season at the helm of the Blue & Gold.
- Patterson tallied her third season achieving 20 or more wins last year, leading UNCG to finish second in the regular season.
- The Spartans were picked to finish second in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with one first-place vote.
- Cain and Gamble were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-SoCon Team.
SCOUTING USC UPSTATE
- USC Upstate began its 2024-25 season falling to No. 22 Kentucky, 98-43, in Lexington.
- Rebekak Gordon and AC Markham led the team with eight points apiece.
- Markham also paced the squad with seven boards and led the way at the three-point line with two.
- Gordon returns as the leading scorer on the team with 328 points last year.
- USC Upstate returns 10 from last season and has added six newcomers (two transfers and four freshmen).
- USC Upstate was picked to finish fifth in the Big South Preseason Poll with 51 points.
- The team concluded the 2023-24 season with a 16-16 overall record and 10-6 mark in the Big South.
- USC Upstate competed in the WNIT last season, falling to the College of Charleston, 70-68, to finish out the season.
