Women’s Basketball Extends Win Streak to 10 with 71-59 Victory Over Samford
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team extended its win streak to 10 after taking down the Samford Bulldogs Thursday night in The Southern Conference (SoCon) play in Birmingham, Alabama, at Pete Hanna Center.
The last time the Spartans tallied a 10-game win streak was in the 1996-97 season.
Jayde Gamble led the Spartans in scoring with 19 points. Khalis Cain posted her eighth double-double of the season and 23rd of her career after leading the game with 10 rebounds and adding 11 points. Nya Smith chipped in 11 points to round out the double-figure scoring for the Spartans.
In addition, with tonight's three steals, Gamble has now reached 200 career steals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A triple from Tasia Johnson at 8:26 got the scoring started in the contest for UNCG to take a 3-0 lead. Later with UNCG on top, 7-2, Samford knocked down two consecutive three-pointers to take its first lead of the game, 8-7. The remainder of the first frame went back-and-forth. Samford's Sadie Stetson got the last-second jumper off to grant the Bulldogs with a one-point lead at the end of the quarter, 17-16.
Another jumper from Stetson gave the Bulldogs a three-point advantage to start the second stanza, 19-16. Samford was able to keep UNCG from taking the lead in the second quarter. With the Bulldogs up 27-23, Gamble launched a three-pointer at 2:15 to bring the Spartans back within one, 27-26. At 1:18, Samford's Kennedy Langham responded by going 2-for-2 at the charity stripe before the Spartans posted a 5-1 run to tie the game, 30-30. Langham went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to close out the second quarter with Samford holding a one-point gap, 31-30.
Coming out of the locker room, Cain scored first in the second half with a layup at 9:02 for a one-point advantage, 32-31. Samford bounced back with four straight points for a 35-32 lead. Two points apiece from Lee and Gamble put UNCG back up by one at 6:18, 36-35, before Samford posted a 6-0 run for a 41-36 advantage. With Samford up, 43-38, a layup from Cain at 3:09 began an 8-0 run for the Spartans to close out the third frame with a three-point lead, 46-43.
UNCG outscored Samford, 25-16, in the final quarter to keep the Bulldogs from taking the lead again in the contest. The Spartans started off the fourth frame with a 7-2 run for the eight-point lead, 53-45. At 6:22, a tip-in layup from Smith began a 12-1 run for the Spartans to secure a 15-point advantage, 65-50. With 1:15 remaining in the game, Smith drained a three-pointer to give UNCG its biggest lead of the game, 71-57. Samford added two more points, but UNCG was able to hold on for the 71-59 victory.
