Women’s Basketball Defeats Wofford, 68-60, for Two-Game Conference Lead
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team secured a 68-60 victory over the Wofford Terriers in Fleming Gymnasium on Saturday to hold a two-game lead for first place in The Southern Conference (SoCon) standings with a 10-1 record.
With today's win, the Spartans improve to 13-0 at home for their best home start in any regular season in UNCG women's basketball program history.
In addition, UNCG is off to its best start in SoCon play since the 2001-02 season. That team started off conference action 11-1 and finished the regular season 14-4.
Three Spartans registered double-figures in the contest. Makiah Asidanya led both teams with a new career-best 20 points. Nya Smith chipped in 13 points. Khalis Cain recorded her seventh double-double of the season and 22nd of her career with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Spartans started Saturday's matchup with 12 unanswered points to keep the Terriers from taking the lead in the first quarter. A jumper from Wofford's Queen Ikhiuqu put the visiting team on the board at 4:01. Wofford continued to chip away, but UNCG stayed on top. Asidanya secured the final field goal of the first quarter with nine seconds reaming for the Spartans to hold a 20-12 lead heading to the bench.
The Terriers bounced back in the second quarter to start off with an 8-2 run, 22-20. A turnaround jumper from Yacine N'Diaye followed by a triple from Asidanya allowed the Spartans to maintain their lead, 27-20. With 2:08 left in the half, Wofford notched a 7-0 run to take its first lead of the game, 33-32. However, Asidanya chipped in the final basket before the break to give the Spartans the one-point advantage heading to the locker room, 34-33.
UNCG came out of the break to record five consecutive points for a 39-33 gap to maintain the lead for the rest of the stanza. After N'Diaye went 2-for-2 at the free throw line with 1:10 on the clock and Asidanya drove in for a layup with 35 seconds left, the Spartans posted the 52-46 lead to close out the third quarter.
Asidanya widened the Spartans' lead by nine after launching a three-pointer to start off the scoring in the final frame at 9:18, 55-46. Wofford responded with an 8-0 run to cut its deficit to one, 55-54, but UNCG held its lead with four consecutive points, 59-54. The Terriers brought the game back within one again with four-straight points, 59-58. However, a couple free throws from Cain followed by three-pointers from Asidanya and Nya Smith, granted UNCG with the 67-58 lead. Both teams traded free throws before UNCG walked away with the 69-60 victory.
