Women’s Basketball Begins Road Slate at Coastal Carolina
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will begin its 2024-25 road slate with a non-conference trip to take on the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in Conway, South Carolina, at HTC Center.
SERIES HISTORY
The Spartans lead in the overall series against the Chanticleers at 13-9. UNCG claimed the 65-59 win over Coastal Carolina last season in Fleming Gym on Nov. 29. Jayde Gamble led last season's game with 19 points and three steals.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
- UNCG most recently notched a 62-54 win over USC Upstate in Greensboro on Saturday to go 2-0 overall.
- Makiah Asidanya led both teams with her second-consecutive game recording 18 points, going 3-for-4 from behind the arc, 3-for-3 from the charity stripe and 6-for-9 at the field.
- Jaila Lee followed closely behind Asidanya with 12 points and led the game with three steals.
- UNCG led the game across five statistical categories: points in the paint (36-26), points off turnovers (17-11), second-chance points (13-5), fast-break points (11-2) and bench points (25-15).
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
- UNCG enters Wednesday's contest with a 2-0 mark on the non-conference stanza.
- The last time the Spartans started the season off 2-0 was in the 2017-18 season when the team earned wins of Southern Wesleyan (93-65) and Greensboro College (82-34).
- The Spartans are leading The Southern Conference (SoCon) in eight statistical categories: bench points per game (39.0), field goal percentage (48.1) fouls per game (12.5), free-throw attempts per game (24.50), scoring margin (34.0), turnover margin (9.50), turnovers forced per game (24.00) and winning percentage (100.0).
- Gamble is leading the league with a 4.00 assist/turnover ratio.
- Asidanya is pacing the SoCon in four categories: field-goal percentage (68.8), free-throw percentage (100.0), three-point percentage (71.4) and three-pointers per game (2.50).
- Through two games, UNCG is beating its opponents in several categories: points (153-85), points per game (76.5-42.5), rebounding (71-60), assists (29-20), points off turnovers (23.0-7.5), steals (24-12) and blocks (4-1).
- The Spartans went 21-12 overall and 8-6 in league play in the 2023-24 season.
- UNCG appeared in the SoCon Championship for the seventh time in program history last season, falling to Chattanooga, 69-60.
- The 2024-25 roster features 10 returners and five newcomers with three transfers and two freshmen.
- Three of last year's starters have returned this season in Khalis Cain, Nia Howard and Gamble.
- Head Coach Trina Patterson is in her ninth season at the helm of the Blue & Gold.
- Patterson tallied her third season achieving 20 or more wins last year, leading UNCG to finish second in the regular season.
- The Spartans were picked to finish second in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with one first-place vote.
- Khalis Cain and Gamble were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-SoCon Team.
SCOUTING COASTAL CAROLINA
- Coastal Carolina also comes into Wednesday's matchup 2-0 overall after having roads wins over Central Michigan (65-62) and Charleston Southern (97-53).
- The Chanticleers are pacing the Sun Belt with an 11.0 three-pointers per game average and turnovers forced per game at 18.0.
- Through two games, Savannah Brooks and Kristin Williams are leading the squad with 30 points each.
- Williams paces the team from behind the arc with eight three-pointers this season. She leads the league and is 15th in the country with a 4.00 three-pointer per game average.
- Riley Stack and Jayden Marable stand out with 15 and 10 boards, respectively.
- Stack is leading the Sun Belt and is ranked 17th nationally with a 3.00 blocks per game average.
- Brooks paces the Chants with five steals.
- Coastal Carolina is outscoring its opponents this season, 162-115.
- The Chanticleers were picked to finish ninth in the 2024-25 Sun Belt Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- Alancia Ramsey was named to the Preseason All-Sun Belt third team.
