Women’s Basketball Drops Contest at Wofford, 62-39

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball dropped a 62-39 contest with Wofford in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Thursday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

SPARTANBURG, S.C.  – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team dropped a 62-39 contest with Wofford in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Thursday night at Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
 
Freshman guard Nya Smith led the Spartans with 16 points in the game, securing two three-pointers and six field goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Nia Howard gained the first bucket of the game after drawing a foul and going 1-for-2 at the free throw line, 1-0. Wofford's Maddie Heiss responded with a jumper on the other end to put Wofford up 2-1 before Jaila Lee got UNCG back on top with a jumper of her own, 3-2. Wofford notched a 6-0 run to take the 8-3 lead, but UNCG bounced back with seven consecutive points for the 10-8 advantage. Wofford scored four more before Smith tallied the last points of the quarter to tie the game, 12-12 at the end of the frame.
 
Wofford came out of the huddle to tally an 11-0 run for the 23-12 advantage. Smith drove down the lane for a layup and drained a half-court shot as the final baskets of the quarter. The Terriers maintained the 12-point advantage going to the locker room, 32-20.
 
Wofford continued its momentum coming out of the intermission to start the third frame with another 11-0 run. However, a layup from Tasia Johnson at 6:47 began a 10-3 run for the Spartans to pull back within 16, 46-30. Both teams traded free throws to conclude the third stanza with Wofford on top, 48-32.
 
The Terriers started off the final quarter with a 4-0 run until UNCG record its own 4-0 run with layups from Smith and Jayde Gamble, 52-36. Wofford quickly retaliated with 10 straight points for the 62-36 advantage. With 39 seconds remaining, Kelly Boyle launched a three-pointer as the final bucket of the game. 

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Smith's 16 points marked her 10th game this season reaching double-figures.
  • Lee followed behind Smith in scoring with nine points.
  • Makiah Asidanya led the game with a new career-best nine rebounds.
  • Gamble followed Asidanya in boards with six.
  • UNCG bested Wofford in bench points, 21-12.
