Smith Named SoCon Player of the Week
SoCon Announces Women's Basketball Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman guard Nya Smith of the UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team was named The Southern Conference (SoCon) Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
"I am so blessed and appreciative to be able to receive this award," said Smith. "It means so much to me because it is a testament of how much I have grown since the beginning of the season, but the work has only just begun! Going forward, I hope that this award will remind me what I am capable of and push me to be better for my team every day."
Smith led the Spartans with 19 points and five rebounds, while adding one steal in the team's contest at Wake Forest on Friday. The Roswell, Georgia, native went a perfect 4-for-4 at the free throw line. In addition, the contest marked the freshman's sixth game with double digits this season.
Smith is fourth in the SoCon with a 2.00 three-pointers per game average. She paces the Spartans from behind the arc with 18 three-pointers this season and is third on the team with 114 points on the 2024-25 campaign.
The last time a Spartan earned a SoCon Player of the Week recognition was on Feb. 20, 2024, when 2023-24 SoCon Defensive Player of the Year Ayanna Khalfani received the honor.
