Women’s Basketball Voted Second in SoCon Preseason Poll; Cain and Gamble Named Preseason All-Conference

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team was voted to finish second in The Southern Conference (SoCon) Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced by the league office on Wednesday.

Graduate student Khalis Cain and senior Jayde Gamble were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-SoCon team.
 
Head Coach Trina Patterson enters her ninth season at the helm of the Blue & Gold. Patterson tallied her third season achieving 20 or more wins last year, leading UNCG to finish second in the regular season at the conclusion of the 2023-24 slate. 
 
The Spartans went 21-12 overall and 8-6 in league play in the 2023-24 season. UNCG appeared in the SoCon Championship for the seventh time in program history, falling to Chattanooga, 69-60. In addition, the Blue & Gold finished 2023-24 with a 15-1 home record, for its best home record since the 2001-02 season.
 
The 2024-25 roster features 10 returners and five newcomers with three transfers and two freshmen.

UNCG concluded the 2023-24 season second in the conference across five statistical categories: rebound margin (5.1), rebounds per game (38.94), scoring margin (7.3), turnover margin (1.24) and winning percentage (63.6). 

Wofford was picked to finish first in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with all seven first place votes. 
 
Named to the 2023-24 SoCon First-Team All-Conference, Gamble returns as the leading scorer on the team with 463 points and a 14.0 points per game average last season. The senior guard led the squad from behind-the-arc last year with 41 three-pointers, averaging 1.2 three-pointers per game. In addition, the Holly Springs, North Carolina, native led the SoCon with 68 steals last season.
 
Cain was the leader for the Spartans last season with 249 rebounds, averaging 7.5 per game. The graduate student also paced the team with 34 total blocks, becoming the UNCG career program leader in blocks last season. Cain led the conference with a 3.8 offensive rebound per game average to conclude the 2023-24 stanza.
 
The Spartans begin the 2024-25 season by hosting North Greenville on Monday, Nov. 4 at 5:00 p.m. in Fleming Gym.
