Women’s Basketball Set for New Year’s Eve Bash with Greensboro College

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will welcome in cross-town foe Greensboro College on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off in Greensboro, North Carolina at Fleming Gymnasium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's basketball team will welcome in crosstown foe Greensboro College on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. tip-off in Fleming Gymnasium.

Tuesday's game against the Pride will be free admission and begin a four-game home stretch.
 

SERIES HISTORY
The Spartans are 21-2 in overall meetings with the Pride. The last matchup between the two teams came in the 2017-18 season in Fleming Gym with UNCG taking a 82-34 victory.
 
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • Before the team's Holiday break, the Spartans dropped a back-and-forth contest with Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foe Wake Forest, 54-50, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on Dec. 20.
  • Nya Smith and Jayde Gamble led the game in scoring with 19 and 17 points, respectively.
  • Jaila Lee followed behind Smith and Gamble in scoring with eight points.
  • Smith also led the game with five rebounds.
  • Gamble, Lee and Khalis Cain followed closely behind with four rebounds.
  • UNCG bested Wake Forest in points in the paint (30-16), fast break points (6-2), rebounds (36-31) and steals (9-8).

ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG currently sits 7-5 overall on the 2024-25 season.
  • The Spartans are undefeated at home with a 5-0 mark in Fleming Gym.
  • The Blue & Gold are leading The Southern Conference (SoCon) in bench points per game (26.1), scoring defense (54.1) and scoring margin (9.9).
  • The team's 54.1 scoring defense puts them at 21st nationally.
  • Gamble is second in the league in field goal percentage (46.3) and steals per game (2.33).
  • UNCG is besting its opponents across several categories: points (768-649), field goals (284-241), three-pointers (74-58), free throws (126-109), rebounds (407-365), points off turnovers (17.6-12.3) and steals (111-87).
  • Gamble paces the team with 160 points, 62 field goals, 40 assists and 28 steals.
  • Smith stands out from behind the arc with 18 three-pointers.
  • Lee paces the squad at the charity stripe with 33 free throws for a 68.8 free throw percentage.
  • Cain leads the Spartans defensively with 76 boards and eight blocks.
  • Smith was named the SoCon Player of the Week on Dec. 24 after leading the Spartans with 19 points and five boards at Wake Forest on Dec. 20.
  • The Spartans went 21-12 overall and 8-6 in league play during the 2023-24 season.
  • UNCG appeared in the SoCon Championship for the seventh time in program history last season, falling to Chattanooga, 69-60.
  • The 2024-25 roster features 10 returners and five newcomers with three transfers and two freshmen.
  • Three of last year's starters have returned this season in Cain, Gamble and Nia Howard.
  • Head Coach Trina Patterson is in her ninth season at the helm of the Blue & Gold.
  • Patterson tallied her third season achieving 20 or more wins last year, leading UNCG to finish second in the regular season.
  • The Spartans were picked to finish second in the 2024-25 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll with one first-place vote.
  • Cain and Gamble were selected to the SoCon Preseason All-SoCon Team. 

SCOUTING GREENSBORO COLLEGE

  • The Pride come into Tuesday's game with a 3-6 overall record and are 1-2 in the USA South.
  • Tuesday's contest will be an exhibition match for Greensboro College as the team competes at the NCAA Division III level.
  • Before the Holiday break, the Pride fell in a 72-39 contest to Brevard College on Dec. 17 in Greensboro at Hanes Gymnasium.
  • The Pride are leading the USA South with a 29.7 defensive rebounds per game average.
  • Azuria Barrino paces the league with a 1.25 average in blocks per game and leads the team with 10 blocks.
  • Meah Brooks leads the team with 94 points and 39 field goals.
  • Nataya Atwater and Taya Phelps stand out from behind the arc with seven three-pointers apiece.
  • Currently sitting at sixth place, Greensboro College was voted to finish in a tie for seventh with William Peace in the USA South Conference.
  • Head Coach Aaron Fernandez is in his first season with the Pride.
  • Greensboro has three returners from a year ago as they look to improve on their 7-19 record from 2023-24.
