Women’s Golf to Compete in Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's golf team is set to compete in the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, hosted by Mercer at Great Waters course from Friday to Sunday.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's golf team is set to compete in the Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational, hosted by Mercer at Great Waters course from Friday to Sunday.

It will be the second of five tournaments for the Spartans this spring. UNCG finished fourth or better in four of its five events in which it was involved during the fall. It included capping the autumn slate with a runner-up finish while hosting the UNCG Collegiate, which saw senior Ava Romfo win the individual title.

THE FORMAT
The Reynolds Lake Oconee Invitational will be a three-day and 54-hole competition with 15 teams. Play will begin with the first round on Friday at 12:30 p.m., with the second and third rounds on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Each day will be in a shotgun start format.

LAST TIME OUT FOR UNCG

  • The Spartans finished seventh on Tuesday at the Advance Golf Partners Collegiate in Palm City, Florida, hosted by UNCG.
  • UNCG, which finished 23-over-par (887), placed seventh, two strokes shy of Arkansas State (885) and 12 ahead of Morehead State (899).
  • The only other Southern Conference (SoCon) foe in the field, East Tennessee State (ETSU), finished in third at 17-over-par (881) after posting rounds of 291-298-292.
  • UNCG ended the event with the fourth-most birdies at 33. Virginia Tech led with 54.
  • The Spartans finished sixth with 173 pars.
  • Sophomore Kasey McIlvaine led the Spartans and tied for sixth on the player leaderboard at one-over-par (217) after posting rounds of 73-69-75. She recorded the team's only eagle at the event on Monday and led the team with a 3.93 stroke average on par fours as well as 40 pars.
  • Freshman Lulu Leetham finished second on the team and tied for 28th at seven-over-par (223) after shooting a 75-76-72.
  • Sophomore Elle Burnette was third for UNCG at nine-over-par (225). She posted rounds of 73-78-74.
  • Competing as an individual, junior Julia Baeumken tied with Burnette for 37th at nine-over-par (225) after shooting a 76 on Sunday, 73 on Monday and another 76 on Tuesday.
  • Freshman Sophie Lauture tied for 46th at 11-over-par (227) with rounds of 77-75-75. She led the Spartans with eight birdies.
  • Senior Grace Holcomb finished fifth on the Spartans and tied for 51st at 12-over-par (228) after shooting rounds of 75-75-78.

 
SCOUTING THE SPARTANS

  • The Spartans finished fourth or better in four of their first five tournaments back in the fall.
  • UNCG broke the single-round tournament record for the Golfweek Fall Challenge at Caledonia Golf & Fish Club in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, on Sept. 9 in round two by shooting a 13-under-par (271). The Spartans later finished third in the event.
  • The Spartans finished fourth in the Clemson Invitational on Aug. 26 at Walker Course in Clemson, South Carolina, to begin the fall.
  • UNCG also tied for third in the Pirate Collegiate Classic from Sept. 30-Oct. 1 in Greenville, North Carolina.
  • Romfo leads the team and is second in The Southern Conference (SoCon) with a 72.23 stroke average.
  • McIlvaine is second on the squad and fifth in the SoCon, averaging 73.13 strokes per round.
  • Lauture is third with a 74.14 stroke average.
  • Burnette stands at fourth averaging 74.81 strokes per round, while Holcomb and Baeumken average 75.00 and 76.38 per round, respectively.
  • The Spartans have three newcomers this season, including freshmen Leetham and Lauture as well as a sophomore transfer from Marshall in McIlvaine.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will head to Humacao, Puerto Rico, to participate in the Puerto Rico Classic, hosted by Ball State University from March 4-6 at Palmas del Mar Golf Club.
