Women’s Soccer and Mercer’s Offensive Battle Ends in 3-3 Draw

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team scored three second-half goals and played to a 3-3 tie against The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer on Sunday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team scored three second-half goals and played to a 3-3 tie against The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Mercer on Sunday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
 
Three different Spartans scored in the game, including Bailey Gourdine, Taylor Mentzer and Morgan Brubaker.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer had an early corner just 30-seconds into the game and UNCG responded with two shots and two corners in the next four minutes of play. In the 12th minute of action, the Spartans turned over the ball at midfield and Lena Dykes fed Jada Moorman a through ball. Moorman finished with her left foot at 11:16 to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. Heading into the locker room, UNCG had the advantage in shots, 8-6.

On Mercer's only corner of the second half, Keelin Pray headed the ball to the left corner of the net off Kendall Cook's inswinger to put the Bears up 2-0 at 48:16. Three minutes later, Mercer extended its lead to 3-0 as Marianna Rapani crossed the ball into the box and Larkin Thomason was there for the half volley finish. UNCG continued to press and was able to capitalize on an open opportunity to cut the deficit to 3-1 at 54:04. Lydia Hindt crossed the ball to an open Gourdine who took one touch before burying her shot underneath the crossbar.

The Spartans moved the ball through their attacking third and made a series of passes before Nicole Hutchinson lofted the ball into the box. Mentzer was there to collect and settle the pass striking it to the back of the net for a one-goal difference, 3-2. Less than two minutes later, Mel Herrera slotted the ball through the middle channel and Brubaker outran the Bears to toe the ball over the goal line tying the game at three. The game went back and forth in the remaining minutes with UNCG notching four shots and Mercer tallying one final shot on goal before the final whistle.

UP NEXT
The Spartans will travel to Charleston, South Carolina, to play The Citadel on Thursday, Oct. 17 with a 3:00 p.m. start time.
