Women’s Soccer Returns to Action at Furman Thursday
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's soccer team will split its time on the road and at home this week, as the Spartans first travel to face Furman on Thursday at Stone Stadium at 7:00 p.m. in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action.
The Spartans enter the contest on a five-game unbeaten streak (3-0-2), while the Paladins are on a seven-game unbeaten streak (4-0-3).

SERIES HISTORY
Furman leads the all-time series, 17-16-3. UNCG took a 1-0 victory during the regular season last year in Greensboro, North Carolina and then the two teams tied 2-2 in the SoCon Tournament before Furman came out on top 5-3 in penalty kicks.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS
Freshman Merle Greulich and junior Morgan Brubaker scored in a 2-0 victory over Wofford on Sunday at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. This was the fourth shutout of the season for the Spartans and second-straight clean sheet after taking a 1-0 victory over Chattanooga on Sunday, Sept. 29. This is the first time since the 2018 season that UNCG is undefeated to start SoCon play.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
- Kiss paces the team with eight points scoring three goals and two assists this season.
- Greulich is second on the team with three goals and one assist for seven points. She has tallied at least one point in three of the last four games.
- Taylor Mentzer and Brubaker each have scored two goals.
- Mel Herrera, Rachel Poplin and Azumi Oka have each chipped in one goal.
- Along with Kiss, Mairead Gayer and Ryen Ortiz each have two helpers.
- The Spartans have the edge over their opponents in shots, 132-114, while foes have the advantage in corner kicks, 54-49.
- UNCG had 25 shots against the Keydets and it was the first game since Sept. 7, 2023, when the Spartans had 20 or more shots. The Spartans had 20 shots against Coastal Carolina that day and won 3-0.
- Among the SoCon, UNCG is third in goal differential (2), goals against average (.917) and shutout percentage (.333). The Spartans are also fourth in save percentage (.780)
- Malone was named the SoCon Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 1 for a 1-0 clean sheet against Chattanooga. This was her second career weekly award.
- She earned her first honor on Sept. 3. This was the Spartans' first SoCon Player of the Week since Oct. 28, 2022, when Nadia Wilson earned the award and first SoCon Defensive Player of the Week since Sept. 27, 2022, when Abby Buchholz earned the recognition.
- Head Coach Stefani Workman is in her first year at the helm of the Spartans and eighth year overall with the Blue & Gold.
- The Spartans were voted to finish seventh in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
- The Spartans added six freshmen and one graduate transfer to the 2024 roster.
SCOUTING FURMAN
- Furman was voted to finish fifth in the 2024 SoCon Preseason Coaches Poll. Neiva Gaither was voted to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
- The Paladins recently played to a 1-1 draw to Samford on Sunday, Oct. 6.
- Jenny Jacobson is pacing the Paladins with four goals and eight total points.
- Tara Katz is second on the team with three goals and one assist for seven points, while Valentina Mosquera also has seven points with two goals and three assists.
- Ellie Herrmann has chipped in three helpers as well.
- Addison Corn has played in eight games and started in six averaging 1.62 goals against while in net. Teammate Reese DeJong has played in 11 games and started in six, averaging 1.70 goals against.
- Furman has the edge in total shots over its opponents, 164-162, shots on goal, 81-71, and corner kicks, 78-46.
- Among the SoCon, Furman is first in corner kicks per game (6.5) and second in shot accuracy (.494). The Paladins' 6.5 corner kicks per game is 29th nationally.
- Nationally, Gaither is 65th with 1.67 shots on goal per game.

The Spartans will host Mercer on Sunday, Oct. 13 at 2:00 p.m. in Greensboro, North Carolina, at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. The first 100 UNCG students will receive a FREE UNCG soccer scarf.
