Softball Heads to Palmetto State to Face Coastal Carolina Tuesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will travel to Conway, South Carolina, for a Tuesday evening match up against non-conference foe Coastal Carolina.

The game is slated for 4:00 p.m. at St. John Stadium.  
The Spartans and Chanticleers are both 15-4 overall this season.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is on a three-game win streak after going 4-1 last week.
  • The Spartans had three five-inning victories last week, including their last two games.
  • UNCG defeated North Carolina A&T, 13-1, in five innings, before falling to Elon on Saturday, 8-4.
  • The Spartans bounced back with a 6-2 win over Sacred Heart on Saturday, an 8-0 five-inning victory over the Pioneers on Sunday and then a 16-4 five-inning win over Elon on Sunday afternoon.
  • UNCG has now totaled three shutouts this season following the 8-0 win over Sacred Heart.

  • Loftin is leading the Spartans with 29 hits and is one of four Spartans with a .400 or better batting average, swinging .446 at the plate in 19 games played.
  • She is nationally ranked 14th in triples (3), 17th in total bases (55), 19th in runs per game (1.26), 28th in runs (24), 31st in total hits, 40th in RBI per game (1.26), 41st in triples per game (0.16), 45th in RBI (24) and 45th in slugging percentage (.848).
  • Rylie Williams is pacing the team with seven home runs which is 28th nationally and first in The Southern Conference (SoCon), while Meredith Harwood and Macy Michael each have six home runs.  
  • Five other Spartans have double figure RBI, with Williams, Harwood and Shipley tied for second with 19 RBI each.
  • Kaylyn Belfield is 32nd nationally and leading the SoCon with a .489 batting percentage.
  • Ward leads the pitching staff with 51 strikeouts, a 1.91 ERA and a 7-2 record.
  • Ward is 24th in victories and 44th nationally in strikeouts.
  • Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
  • UNCG is ranked in the top 25 nationally in home runs per game (5th/1.79), home runs (6th/34), slugging percentage (7th/.651)RBI per game (8th/8.00), walks (8th/93), scoring (10th/8.58), on base percentage (14th/.454), triples (14th/8), batting average (15th/.360), RBI (15th/152), total runs (17th/163), hits (18th/187), triples per game (20th/0.42), and doubles per game (23rd/1.74).
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in 16 categories, including batting average, doubles, doubles per game, hits, home runs, home runs per game, on base percentage, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, total runs, triples, triples per game, win/loss percentage and walks.
  • Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.  
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
  • It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
  • It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Head Coach Janelle Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans saw another successful statistical year, leading the SoCon in home runs per game (1.37), home runs (81), slugging percentage (0.490), triples per game (0.22) and walks (240).
  • UNCG was also ranked nationally in the top 30 in four categories: sixth in walks, 11th in home runs, 14th in home runs per game and 30th in slugging percentage.
  • Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Jorde Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
  • The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
  • UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.
  • The Spartans have four of their pitchers returning this season, including Chartrand.

RUNDOWN ON COASTAL CAROLINA

  • Coastal Carolina went 34-21 overall in the 2024 season with a 14-10 Sun Belt record.
  • The Chanticleers were voted to finish sixth in the 2025 Sun Belt Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Georgia Hood and Delaney Keith were named to the 2025 Preseason All-Sun Belt Team. Hood earned 2024 All-Sun Belt first team honors along with NFCA All-Region Second Team recognition.
  • Hood is pacing the team with a .500 batting average, swinging 26-for-52 with 13 runs scored and 20 RBI.
  • Keith leads the team with 24 RBI and 11 home runs.
  • Keirstin Roose is a force on the bases, successfully stealing 9-for-9 bases this season.
  • Picone was named Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week after going 2-0 allowing just one earned run over 14.0 innings of work to post a 0.50 ERA.
  • Hood was named Sun Belt Player of the Week on Feb. 18 for having a .563 batting average, five RBI, three runs, one home run and .588 on base percentage.
