Softball Hosts Wofford for Three-Game SoCon Series

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team hosts Wofford on Friday and Saturday for a three-game Southern Conference (SoCon) series at UNCG Softball Stadium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team hosts Wofford on Friday and Saturday for a three-game Southern Conference (SoCon) series at UNCG Softball Stadium.

Friday's game will be a single game starting at 4:00 p.m. and then the two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.

Currently, UNCG is 23-10 overall and 1-2 in the SoCon and Wofford is 19-11 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Last year was the Terriers' first season as a team, where they took two of the three games played in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are now open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is coming off a 15-5 loss to Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and in-state foe North Carolina on Wednesday at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
  • The Spartans totaled 12 hits in the game which is the 14th contest this season with double figure hits.
  • Jorde Chartrand led the Spartans swinging 3-for-4 with one run scored, two RBI, a double and a home run.
  • This was her sixth homer of the season and 20th of her career.
  • Grace Loftin went 2-for-4 with one run scored, one RBI and one home run.
  • This was her ninth homer of the season and 38th blast of her career.
  • Macy Michael crushed her seventh homer of the season.

RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS

  • Kaylyn Belfield is leading the Spartans with a .442 batting average and has successfully stolen 11-of-13 bases.
  • Belfield is 57th nationally with her hitting clip.
  • Loftin is leading the Spartans with 44 hits and is one of three Spartans with a .400 or better batting average, swinging .427 at the plate in 33 games played with a team-high 34 RBI. She also paces the team with nine doubles, three triples and nine home runs.
  • Her 44 hits are 37th in the nation, her 35 runs are 39th, and her 34 RBI are 60th.
  • UNCG is nationally ranked in the top 25 in home runs (5th/55), home runs per game (8th/1.67), RBI (17th/219), slugging percentage (17th/.587), walks (18th/131), hits (19th/293), RBI per game (20th/6.64), total runs (21st/233), total sacrifice flies (22nd/14) and scoring (24th/7.06).
  • Jessie Shipley, Rylie Williams and Michael are second on the team with seven homers.
  • Along with Loftin, nine other Spartans have double-figure RBI, with six totaling 20 or more. Chartrand has 26 RBI, Shipley has 25, Meredith Harwood has 22 RBI and Williams and Michael have 20 each.
  • Salem Ward leads the pitching staff with 70 strikeouts. She is second with a 2.78 ERA and has a 10-4 record in 22 appearances.
  • Ward is nationally ranked 37th in victories, 39th in pitching appearances and 47th in saves.
  • Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
  • Gardner earned SoCon Player of the Week, while Chartrand was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the Spartans' 4-0 weekend at the CSU Round Robin.
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in 13 categories, including batting average, hits, home runs, home runs per game, on-base percentage, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, total runs, total sacrifice flies, triples and walks.
  • Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.  
  • Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
  • It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
  • It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
  • UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.

RUNDOWN ON WOFFORD

  • Wofford finished the 2024 season 23-24 overall and 11-10 in its first year as a team.
  • The Terriers were voted to finish fifth in the 2025 SoCon Preseason Poll, while Margaret Axelson and Kate Platte were selected to the SoCon Preseason Second Team.
  • Wofford is coming off a 4-2 win over USC Upstate on Wednesday and have won the last three of four games.
  • The Terriers went 2-1 against Furman in the two teams' SoCon opening series.
  • Brianna Stanley is leading the Terriers with a .371 batting average, while Platte has a team-best 34 hits so far this season.
  • Havalynn Abernathy is pacing Wofford with 20 RBI, while six other Terriers have double-figure RBI.
  • Stanley and Hope Ingle each have a team-best four home runs on the season, while Abernathy has rounded out the team with three homers.
  • Ingle is leading the charge with seven doubles.
  • In 89.1 innings tossed and 13 appearances, Axelson has struck out 58 batters with 11 complete games, three shutouts and a 9-4 record.
  • Axelson is leading the SoCon in complete games, hit batters (2), strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.87), WHIP (1.01) and walks allowed per seven innings (1.18).
  • Nationally, Wofford is third in double plays (23) and double plays per game (0.77), fourth in total sacrifice bunts (34), 12th in ERA (2.08) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.20).
