Softball Extends Win Streak to Seven with Furman Series Sweep

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Furman in a doubleheader on Saturday with scores of 9-4 and 5-2 to secure its second conference sweep of the season.

GREENVILLE, S.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team defeated The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Furman in a doubleheader on Saturday with scores of 9-4 and 5-2 to secure its second conference sweep of the season.
 
With the victory, UNCG also extended its win streak to seven.
 
UNCG improves to 30-10 overall and 7-2 in the SoCon and Furman falls to 13-25 overall and 3-6 in the conference.
 
Game 1: UNCG 9 – Furman 4
 

  • UNCG got on top, 2-0, in the top of the second scoring two runs on Macy Michael's one-out double to left center.
  • Hadley Gardner led off the frame with a single to left field and Nya South drove the ball out to right field for Michael's RBI.
  • Furman responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the third to tie the game, 2-2, before stranding two Paladins on base.
  • The Paladins took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the fourth as Caitlin Goldwait singled to second base to drive him Katie Peeler for a 3-2 advantage.
  • After a scoreless fifth inning for both teams, UNCG broke open the game with five runs on five hits and one error.
  • With runners on second and third with no outs, Jessie Shipley crushed a long ball over the left-center fence for a 5-3 lead.
  • Following the first out, Michael singled to center field and Samantha Beck blasted the ball over the left-field fence for a 7-3 advantage.
  • The Paladins pushed across one run in the bottom of the sixth, cutting the deficit to three, 7-4, on an RBI single from Goldwait.
  • UNCG's offensive attack persisted, scoring two more runs in the top of the seventh, the first on Betsy Eatmon's solo homer to left field and then Meredith Harwood's sacrifice fly for a 9-4 lead.
  • In Furman's last at bats, Madison Petty hit a two-out double, but Reese Byrd secured the 9-4 win with a fly out.

 
NOTES:

  • Shipley hit her ninth homer of the season and 33rd career blast.
  • Beck crushed her sixth home run of the season and 11th of her career.
  • Eatmon connected for her first homer of the season and ninth of her career.
  • This was the Spartans' 19th game with multiple home runs.
  • Byrd tallied her fifth complete game of the season and 13th of her career.

Game 2: UNCG 5 – Furman 2
 

  • UNCG was the first team to score, as Chartrand grounded out to second base in the top of the first, but Beck was able to cross the plate for a 1-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the frame with one out and a runner on third, Burroughs doubled down the left field line scoring Goldwait to tie the game, 1-1.
  • After a scoreless second inning, Chartrand hit a two-out three-run home run down the left field line extending UNCG's lead to two, 4-1.
  • The Spartans put another run up on the board in the top of the fifth thanks to Grace Loftin's solo homer to left field for a 5-1 advantage.
  • The Paladins' Perry hit a lead off double in the bottom of the seventh and moved over to third on an error, putting runners on the corners with no outs.
  • Peeler then hit a sacrifice fly to left center, cutting the deficit to three, 5-2. UNCG's defense was able to hold on for the win after a fielder's choice and a pop up to second base.  

 
NOTES:

  • This was the Spartans' 20th game with multiple home runs.
  • Chartrand hit her seventh homer of the season and 21st of her career.
  • Loftin tallied her 11th home run of the season and 40th of her career.
  • Chartrand tossed her second complete game of the season and eighth of her career.
