Softball Welcomes Radford for Midweek Game

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will return home to host Radford for a single game on Wednesday, March 19, with a first pitch slated for 4:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will return home to host Radford for a single game on Wednesday with a first pitch slated for 4:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.

All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are now open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

UNCG is 21-7 overall and Radford is 15-16 overall with a 3-0 Big South record. The Highlanders will travel to Greensboro following their game at Radford, Virginia, against Charlotte on Tuesday.

UNCG and Radford split the doubleheader last season, where the Spartans claimed game one, 3-1, in nine innings and fell to the Highlanders, 4-3.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is coming off a 4-0 weekend, which stretched its win streak to five.
  • The Spartans defeated Fairfield with scores of 4-2 in 10 innings and 6-0 and then later got past Charleston Southern, 13-1, in five innings and 6-1.
  • Salem Ward earned three wins over the weekend, while Jorde Chartrand recorded the final win of the weekend.
  • Chartrand struck out 11 total batters this weekend in 14.0 innings tossed while just allowing one run.
  • Hadley Gardner hit four of the Spartans' nine home runs this weekend and led UNCG with a .545 batting average and eight RBI.
  • Macy Michael also had a .545 batting average this weekend tallying two doubles.

RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS

  • Kaylyn Belfield is leading the Spartans with a .493 batting average and has successfully stolen 11-of-13 bases.
  • Belfield is 16th nationally with her hitting clip.
  • Grace Loftin is leading the Spartans with 36 hits and is one of three Spartans with a .400 or better batting average, swinging .414 at the plate in 28 games played with a team-high 32 RBI. She also paces the team with seven doubles and three triples.
  • Her 32 RBI are 39th nationally.
  • UNCG is nationally ranked in the top 25 in home runs (8th/47), home runs per game (8th/1.68), slugging percentage (12th/.611), sacrifice flies (12th/14), RBI (16th/197), walks (16th/116), RBI per game (17th/7.04), scoring (18th/7.46), total runs (19th/209), hits (20th/255), batting average (22nd/.342) and on base percentage (25th/.426).
  • Jessie Shipley, Loftin and Rylie Williams are pacing the team with seven homers each. They are ranked 85th nationally and are third in The Southern Conference (SoCon).
  • Along with Loftin, nine other Spartans have double-figure RBI, with five totaling 20 or more. Shipley, Meredith Harwood and Chartrand all have 22 RBI.
  • Ward leads the pitching staff with 65 strikeouts. She is second with a 2.15 ERA and has a 10-3 record in 20 appearances.
  • Ward is 21st in victories and 63rd nationally in strikeouts.
  • Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
  • Gardner most recently earned SoCon Player of the Week, while Chartrand was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the Spartans' 4-0 weekend at the CSU Round Robin.
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in 15 categories, including batting average, hits, home runs, home runs per game, on-base percentage, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, total runs, total sacrifice flies, triples, triples per game, win/loss percentage and walks.
  • Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.  
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
  • It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
  • It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans saw another successful statistical year, leading the SoCon in home runs per game (1.37), home runs (81), slugging percentage (0.490), triples per game (0.22) and walks (240).
  • UNCG was also ranked nationally in the top 30 in four categories: sixth in walks, 11th in home runs, 14th in home runs per game and 30th in slugging percentage.
  • Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
  • The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
  • UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.
  • The Spartans have four of their pitchers returning this season, including Chartrand.

RUNDOWN ON RADFORD

  • Radford was voted to finish sixth in the 2025 Preseason Big South Conference Coaches Poll.
  • Morgan Cooper was voted to the 2025 Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • The Highlanders went 24-23 overall and 7-11 in the Big South during the 2024 season.
  • Amanda Lee is pacing the team with a .347 batting average and 34 hits.
  • Rachel Smith is leading the team with 19 RBI, six home runs and has successfully stolen 10-of-13 bases.
  • Five other Highlanders also have double figure RBI.
  • Cassi Barbato is leading the charge with eight doubles and is one of three Highlanders with a .300 or better batting average.
  • In the circle, Dakota Redmon has tossed 84.2 innings and has struck out a team-best 66 batters in 16 game appearances.
  • Redmon is keeping opponents to a .254 batting average and is fourth nationally with 10 complete games.
  • Redmon and Smith earned weekly honors this past week from the Big South and Cooper was tabbed the first Big South Pitcher of the Week.
  • Nationally, the Highlanders are 36th in hits (242).
  • Radford is first in the Big South in triples (6) and shutouts (4).

The Spartans are set to begin SoCon play this weekend in Chattanooga, Tennessee, starting with a double header on Saturday with first pitch slated at 1:00 p.m. at Frost Stadium. UNCG and Chattanooga will play on Sunday as well with a first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
