Softball Begins Five-Game Homestand with North Carolina on Wednesday

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will begin a five-game homestand with Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foe, North Carolina (UNC) on Wednesday at the UNCG Softball Stadium with a first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) softball team will begin a five-game homestand with Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) foe, North Carolina (UNC) on Wednesday at the UNCG Softball Stadium with a first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m.

Currently, UNCG is 23-9 overall and Carolina is 25-8 overall. The Tar Heels have taken the last three games against the Spartans and UNCG last won on Feb. 23, 2020 in Greensboro, 8-5.

All regular season softball home games are free admission. The concessions at UNCG Softball Stadium are now open. Bringing in outside food is not permitted and pets are not allowed into the stadium.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG is coming off a 1-2 series against The Southern Conference (SoCon) foe Chattanooga this weekend.
  • The Spartans capped their trip with a 14-6 offensive victory over the Mocs on Sunday.
  • UNCG totaled 15 hits in the game, which is the 13th contest this season with double figure hits. It is tied for the second most this season.
  • Reese Byrd earned her seventh win of the season in the circle, while Jorde Chartrand tallied her first save of the season.
  • Four Spartans hit home runs, including Samantha Beck, Grace Loftin, Chartrand and Hadley Gardner.
  • Loftin went 4-for-4 with four runs scored, one RBI, one walk, two doubles and a homer.

RUNDOWN ON THE SPARTANS

  • Kaylyn Belfield is leading the Spartans with a .453 batting average and has successfully stolen 11-of-13 bases.
  • Belfield is 40th nationally with her hitting clip.
  • Loftin is leading the Spartans with 42 hits and is one of three Spartans with a .400 or better batting average, swinging .424 at the plate in 32 games played with a team-high 33 RBI. She also paces the team with nine doubles and three triples.
  • Her 34 RBI are 38th nationally and 42 hits are 50th in the nation.
  • UNCG is nationally ranked in the top 25 in home runs (7th/52), home runs per game (8th/1.63), walks (14th/131), RBI (18th/214), slugging percentage (18th/.584), total sacrifice flies (20th/14), RBI per game (21st/6.69), total runs (21st/228), hits (23rd/281) and scoring (23rd/7.13).
  • Loftin leads the team with eight home runs, while Jessie Shipley and Rylie Williams each have seven homers.
  • Along with Loftin, nine other Spartans have double-figure RBI, with five totaling 20 or more. Shipley and Chartrand have 24 RBI, while Meredith Harwood has 22 RBI and Williams has 20.
  • Salem Ward leads the pitching staff with 69 strikeouts. She is second with a 2.18 ERA and has a 10-4 record in 21 appearances.
  • Ward is 37th in victories and 86th nationally in strikeouts.
  • Ward earned SoCon Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 17 after going 4-0 in the Spiro Invitational.
  • Gardner earned SoCon Player of the Week, while Chartrand was tabbed SoCon Pitcher of the Week after the Spartans' 4-0 weekend at the CSU Round Robin.
  • The Spartans are leading the SoCon in 14 categories, including batting average, hits, home runs, home runs per game, on-base percentage, RBI per game, RBI, scoring, slugging percentage, total runs, total sacrifice flies, triples, win/loss percentage and walks.
  • Head Coach Janelle Breneman earned her 400th win at the helm of the Spartans following a 7-2 win over Saint Francis on Feb. 16.
  • UNCG was chosen to finish second in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Spartans received one first-place vote.  
  • The Spartans concluded the 2024 season 33-26 overall and 13-8 in the SoCon.
  • It was the fifth-straight season with 30 or more wins.
  • It was also the ninth year with 30 or more wins under the direction of Breneman, who is in her 13th year with the Blue & Gold.
  • The Spartans saw another successful statistical year, leading the SoCon in home runs per game (1.37), home runs (81), slugging percentage (0.490), triples per game (0.22) and walks (240).
  • UNCG was also ranked nationally in the top 30 in four categories: sixth in walks, 11th in home runs, 14th in home runs per game and 30th in slugging percentage.
  • Loftin was named to the SoCon Preseason First Team, while Betsy Eatmon and Chartrand were voted to the Preseason Second Team.
  • The Spartans reached the SoCon Championship game for the sixth-straight year in 2024, excluding the COVID 2020 shortened season, falling to Chattanooga in the double elimination game.
  • UNCG added four freshmen and two transfers.
  • The Spartans have four of their pitchers returning this season, including Chartrand.

RUNDOWN ON NORTH CAROLINA

  • UNC finished 30-20 overall in 2024 and 10-14 in the ACC.
  • Carolina was voted to finish ninth in the 2025 ACC Preseason Poll.
  • Alex Coleman was voted to the 2025 ACC Preseason Team.
  • Four Tar Heels have a .400 or better batting average, with Kat Rodriguez leading the way with a .439 hitting clip.
  • Rodriguez is also pacing the team with 46 RBI, 43 hits and 11 doubles.
  • Coleman has successfully stolen 10-of-11 bases this season to lead the team.
  • Carlie Myrtle has 12 homers this season and Sanaa Thompson is second with seven home runs.
  • Kenna Raye Dark has 85 strikeouts in 20 appearances in the circle. She has a 2.64 ERA with 11 complete games and an 11-5 record.
  • Britton Rogers is leading the pitching staff with a 2.14 ERA and is keeping opponents to a .218 hitting clip.
  • Carolina is coming off a 2-1 series against Louisville, where the Tar Heels won 14-3 and 13-5.

UP NEXT 
The Spartans will continue its home slate with a three-game series against Wofford this weekend. UNCG and the Terriers will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium. Saturday's promotion is Military Appreciation.

The third game is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Sunday's promotion is Softball Bingo and buy one get one free hot dogs.
