Women’s Tennis Falls in 4-3 Battle With Longwood

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team fell in a 4-3 battle with the Longwood Lancers on Saturday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team fell in a 4-3 battle with the Longwood Lancers on Saturday at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center.

"We overcame a lot today, at the very end we came up just a little short," said Head Coach Mat Iandolo. "We will get better from this."

The Lancers got on the board after securing the doubles point. First, Oriana Izarra and Phoebe Mitchell defeated Elisabeth Birkevold and Lauren Thomson on court three, 6-2. Longwood got the 1-0 lead after Elizaveta Gnilozubova and Karina Rizvanouva secured the 6-3 win over Alexandra Dodashev and Olivia Gallagher, 6-3. The doubles match between Alexandra Magia & Feline Van Eijkelenburg and Raegan Mitchell & Sydney Bly remained unfinished at 4-4.

Longwood continued its momentum into singles action by securing the first two matches. Longwood's Mtichell defeated Bly, 7-5, 6-3, on court four just before Izarra secured the 7-5, 6-4 win over UNCG's Mitchell for Longwood to take the 3-0 lead. UNCG bounced back by securing the next three singles contests. Dodashev got the Spartans on the board in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 win over Rizvanouva on court two. Gallagher notched UNCG's second point after securing a 6-7, 7-6, 6-2, battle over Van Eijkelenburg on singles No. 1. Birkevold tied the match up after defeating Gnilozubova on court five, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2. Magia was able to defeat Luna Urso, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 on court six to grant Longwood with the 4-3 victory.
