Women’s Tennis Falls in 4-3 Battle with Samford

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 battle with the Samford Bulldogs in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 battle with the Samford Bulldogs in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Saturday at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

"Great effort today from the entire squad to win two of the top three matches against this team," said Head Coach Mat Iandolo. "To have two sophomores win in straight sets says a lot for the direction of our program. Olivia had another comeback win. She has an unbreakable spirit."

Samford posted the first point of the day after securing doubles. Eleni Liakonis and Meredith Taylor notched a 6-1 win over Elisabeth Birkevold and Lauren Thomson on court three before Margaret Jaraczewski and Hailey Troup defeated Sydney Bly and Raegan Mitchell, 7-5, on court two. Alexandra Dodashev and Olivia Gallagher took down Sara Erenda and Grace Keller, 7-5, on court one, but Samford was able to head into singles with a 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead when Taylor notched a 6-4, 6-4, win over Mitchell on court four. Thomson put the Spartans on the board when she defeated Troup, 6-4, 7-5, on court three. Bly was able to tie the match at 2-2 with a 6-2, 7-6, win over Troup on court five. Gallagher put UNCG on top, 3-2, after claiming a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 battle over Jaraczewski on court one. However, Samford was able to claim the next two games to secure the win. Liakonis defeated Dodashev, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, on court two before Libby Blair recorded a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Birkevold on court six to grant Samford with the 4-3 win.

The Spartans will continue their SoCon stretch on the road with a match at Chattanooga on Friday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the UTC Center before taking on Western Carolina on Saturday, March 29 at 2:00 p.m. at the Catamount Athletic Complex.
