Chattanooga Outlasts Women’s Tennis, 4-3
CHATTANOOGA, TENN. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) women's tennis team was outlasted in a 4-3 battle with the Chattanooga Mocs in The Southern Conference (SoCon) action on Friday afternoon at the UTC Tennis Center.
"We did a great job of putting ourselves in position to win this match by taking the doubles point in spite of having one of our team leaders out," said Head Coach Mat Iandolo. "Unfortunately, we did not consolidate enough in singles."
The Spartans tallied the first point of the contest after securing two of three doubles matchups. Sydney Bly and Raegan Mitchell defeated Madlena Orlova and Savannah Presson, 6-4, on court two. Chattanooga's Emma Pedretti and Margaret Manolache responded with a 7-6 (7-2) victory over Elisabeth Birkevold and Ella Olexa on court three. However, Olivia Gallagher and Lauren Thomson prevailed to a 7-6 (7-5) win over Alice Hall and Rozalie Dohnalova to give UNCG the 1-0 lead heading into singles action.
The Mocs were able to bounce back by securing the first four singles contests, clinching the match, 4-3. Hall put Chattanooga on the board with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Olexa on court six. Burns put the Mocs on top with a 6-2, 6-3, victory over Bly on court four. Pedretti granted the home team with a 3-1 lead after defeating Mitchell 6-3, 6-1 on court three. Orlova clinched the match for the Mocs after securing a 6-4, 6-2, victory over Gallagher on court one. UNCG notched the final two singles matches, but it wasn't enough to keep Chattanooga from claiming the 4-3 victory. Birkevold defeated Manolache, 6-2, 6-3 on court five and Thomson notched the back-and-forth battle over Presson on court two, 2-6, 7-5, 10-8.
