Volleyball Set for Road Trip to Western Carolina & Chattanooga

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The UNC Greensboro (UNCG) volleyball team is set to hit the road this weekend to continue The Southern Conference (SoCon) schedule at Western Carolina on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Chattanooga on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG went 0-2 at home last weekend after falling to The Citadel, 1-3, and Wofford, 0-3, in Fleming Gym.
  • Chloe Nussbaum paced the Spartans as the libero last week after notching 30 digs and adding three kills and one ace. The freshman recorded a 4.29 digs per set average.
  • Allie Sweet led the Spartans on the outside with 31 kills for a 4.43 kills per set average. Sweet added nine digs and six blocks for 35.0 points.
  • Izora Gragg stood out as the setter for the Spartans, leading the way with 66 assists for a 9.43 assists per set average. 

ABOUT THE SPARTANS

  • UNCG comes into the week with a 5-11 overall record and 0-4 mark in the SoCon.
  • Sweet is pacing the conference in five statistical categories: attacks per set (13.41), kills per set (4.31), points (294.5), points per set (4.83), attacks (818) and kills (263).
  • The freshman's 818 attacks this season puts her at second in the country, while her 263 kills ranks her at 10th nationally.
  • Gragg stands out at second in the SoCon with 597 assists this season.
  • America Anderson is the leading middle hitter for the Spartans with 55.0 total blocks this season.
  • Madeline Timmerman follows closely behind Anderson with 53.0 total blocks and is leading the team with 20 service aces.
  • Nussbaum is pacing the squad as the libero with 229 digs.
  • Sweet was named SoCon Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 2 in the first round of weekly awards for the 2024 season.
  • The Spartans currently sit at ninth place in the SoCon standings.
  • Head Coach Felicia Turner is in her second season at the helm of the UNCG volleyball team in 2024. 
  • Assistant Coach Trent Dunahoo is in his second season with the Spartans, while Assistant Coach Justin Paggao was added to the coaching staff in the summer of 2024.
  • UNCG was picked to finish ninth in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • The 2024 squad features seven returners and 10 newcomers (five freshmen and five transfers).

SCOUTING WESTERN CAROLINA

  • The Catamounts sit in sixth place among the SoCon with a 7-8 overall record and 1-1 mark in the conference.
  • Western Carolina's matchup with UNCG will be its first home game of the 2024 season. The squad stayed on the road for the entirety of the non-conference slate and its home opening conference matchup with Mercer that was scheduled for Sept. 29 was postponed.
  • In their last time out, the Catamounts dropped a 3-0 matchup with Samford on Friday, Oct. 4 in Birmingham, Alabama.
  • Western Carolina claimed its SoCon-opening win at The Citadel on Wednesday, Sept. 25 over five sets.
  • As a team, Western Carolina is leading the league with a 2.51 blocks per set average, 38.76 attacks per set and 135.5 total blocks.
  • Janelle Blue paces the SoCon at the net with 70.0 total blocks and a 1.32 blocks per set average.
  • The Catamounts were picked to finish just above the Spartans in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll at eighth place.
  • Western Carolina will continue its weekend by hosting Wofford on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:00 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY VS WESTERN CAROLINA
Western Carolina paces the overall meetings with UNCG at 35-26. The Catamounts claimed both matches against the Spartans last season in straight sets.
 
SCOUTING CHATTANOOGA

  • The Mocs sit just above the Spartans at eighth place in the SoCon with an 0-3 mark in conference play and 9-8 overall record.
  • The Mocs most recently jumped out of conference play claiming a 3-0 win over Alabama A&M on Tuesday in Chattanooga.
  • Prior to the team's win over the Bulldogs, Chattanooga dropped a five-set matchup with Mercer on Saturday, Oct. 5 in Macon.
  • Elaine Redman is currently the leading setter in the conference with 682 assists.
  • Paige Gallentine is pacing the Mocs with 326 digs and 19 service aces.
  • Sydney Jackwin leads the team on the outside with 206 kills, while Kynli Kirkendoll stands out at the net with 47.0 total blocks.
  • The Mocs were tabbed to finish seventh in the SoCon Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Gallentine was named to the SoCon Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Chattanooga will host The Citadel on Friday at 6:00 p.m. before taking on the Spartans on Saturday.

 
SERIES HISTORY VS CHATTANOOGA
The Mocs lead in the overall series against the Spartans at 32-23. Chattanooga took both matches from UNCG last season with a five-set battle in Greensboro on Sept. 30. and a 3-0 sweep in Tennessee on Oct. 26.

The Spartans will return home to host Mercer on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:00 p.m. and Samford on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 5:00 p.m.
 
Friday's match against the Bears will be the team's annual Pink Game for Breast Cancer Awareness. In addition, the first 50 fans will receive FREE pizza!
 
For Saturday's match, the first 60 fans in attendance will receive a FREE Krispy Kreme doughnut! Also, the team will be doing postgame autographs at the conclusion of the match.
