Nobel Prize winner Dr. George Smith is coming to UNC Greensboro on March 19 as part of the Syngenta Symposium. Dr. Smith won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2018 for his studies on phage display, which enables scientists to see surface proteins on a virus. The technology allows for the creation of human antibodies specific to any chosen antigen, even those that evade our natural immune systems. Some of our most important and potent medicines are created in this way, but are cost-prohibitive for many of those who need them.
The event, titled “Phage antibodies: potent medicines we shouldn’t have to pay monopoly prices for,” will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Sullivan Science Building, Room 101. Free parking will be available in the McIver Deck.
It is sponsored by Syngenta and the UNCG departments of biology, and chemistry and biochemistry. It is free and open to the public, with light refreshments following.
