Students’ mental health and well-being are critical to their success in college, and parents and families play an instrumental role in supporting their student’s mental health and well-being. Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. This training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.
First Aiders will participate in a one 8-hour in-person, instructor led-session.
DATE: Friday, October 4 from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. Lunch is provided!
LOCATION: Gove Student Health Center, 107 Gray Drive, room 015
The MHFA Course covers:
-Common signs and symptoms of mental illness.
-Common signs and symptoms of substance use.
-How to interact with a person in crisis.
-How to connect the person with help.
-Plus, expanded content on trauma, addiction, and self-care.
Family members, Faculty, Staff, and Students are encouraged to become Mental Health First Aiders.

Do you feel like you have lost control in your life? Are you engaging in risky behaviors? Are you numbing the pain with alcohol and/or substances? This group is for students who want to establish healthy coping strategies. Each session will focus on a specific strategy to help you cope with trauma and substance use. Students will have opportunities to engage in mindfulness techniques, creating a secure space, skills in setting boundaries, or ways to empower yourself through vulnerability. Note: this is group is intended to learn about coping mechanisms but is not to process or delve into the disturbing trauma or addiction memories. Drop-ins are welcome!
