Eric Laws, a PhD student at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, studies bacterial cells and data storage. “If you ever feel lost, there's always a place for you to find.” That’s the advice UNC Greensboro social work major Kiara Hickman gives to incoming freshmen. As a first-generation student, navigating college was intimidating at first. But she credits the wide array of campus organizations for helping her find her place at UNCG. Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when she was six months old, Magnolia Long was given a life expectancy of 34 years. When applying for college, she wondered if she would be able to succeed despite all of her health challenges. Abigail Knight didn’t have to choose between her love of history and medicine. At UNC Greensboro, she gets hands-on experience in both. With support from the School of Nursing and Lloyd International Honors College, Abigail conducted archival research on how the medical field has evolved over time.
